TMJ Treatment Process
TMJ diagnosis begins with determining whether the jaw joint is the source of your symptoms. At Tucker Dental Excellence, we use advanced evaluation techniques including heart rate variability (HRV) testing to measure how jaw position affects stress on the body. By monitoring HRV while adjusting the position of the jaw, we can identify the position that places the least amount of strain on the muscles and joints. This physiologic approach helps us create a personalized treatment plan focused on long-term relief and improved function.
Once the ideal jaw position is identified, treatment typically involves a custom oral appliance, sometimes called a bite splint, designed to hold the jaw in a more stable and relaxed position. This helps reduce stress on the jaw joints, muscles, head, neck, and surrounding systems. Many patients experience improvement in jaw pain, headaches, ear symptoms, and muscle tension soon after beginning treatment. As symptoms improve, appliance wear may gradually be reduced based on your individual needs.
TMJ can affect more than just the jaw and may include:
- Jaw pain or soreness

- Ear pain or ringing (tinnitus)
- Clicking or popping of the jaw
- Limited or locked jaw movement
- Neck, shoulder, or upper back pain
- Bite changes or uneven wear on teeth

- Occurs when the cushioning disc in the joint shifts out of position
- May cause clicking, popping, or irregular movement
- Can lead to limited or locked jaw function
